Grace Cathedral

We are excited to be participating in the upcoming Women’s March on Washington and Women’s March San Francisco on Saturday, January 21. Dean Malcolm Clemens Young and Executive Pastor Ellen Clark King will lead the the group in San Francisco, and a group from the diocese, led by the cathedral’s Rev. Mary Carter Greene, will travel to Washington D.C. to join the march there. 

The Women’s March is a national movement to unify and empower everyone who stands for human rights, civil liberties and social justice for all, values central to the cathedral’s mission. Our message for the march is “Grace for All.”

We feel it is important to participate because while the cathedral is nonpartisan it has always worked for social justice, supporting the rights of workers in the 1930’s, civil rights in the 1950s and 1960s and women’s rights in the 1970s.  In the 1980s and 1990s, the cathedral was at the forefront of serving people impacted by HIV/AIDS, and most recently has worked for marriage equality.

We are marching because we are concerned about the status of women, immigrants and other disenfranchised people, given recent divisive political rhetoric. We are also concerned about the adversarial tone of public discourse, and we want to help people come together and love their neighbor. We warmly welcome everyone–men, women and children–to be part of the Grace Cathedral team, whether here in San Francisco or in Washington.
