All Christians are called to give of themselves in ministry. Countless areas in the life of the cathedral are enhanced by the work of volunteers. The congregation possesses a wealth of talent, time, and enthusiasm, and opportunities exist for any time commitment, from one-time projects to regular weekly or monthly jobs.
Contribute to the needs of the saints and extend hospitality to strangers.
- Romans 12:13
As a point of pilgrimage for many travelers, and as a community open to those seeking a welcoming environment, Grace Cathedral opens its doors to all. There are many opportunities to make the visitor welcome and to provide newcomers with spiritual nourishment. Grace Cathedral is called to be a house of prayer for all people.
For more information about any of the opportunities below, please contact the Office of the Congregation or call 415-749-6327.
Ushers welcome visitors and congregation members, pass out service leaflets, take up the collection, guide people during communion, and clean up after each service. They must be helpful and friendly, with the strength to stand for several hours. Most ushers sign up for a monthly rotation, and all are asked to be on hand for major services such as Christmas and Easter.
These outgoing and dedicated individuals are the cathedral's front line in our ministry of hospitality, welcoming visitors and offering assistance and information. During Hospitality Hours, the greeters staff the Welcome to Grace table and kiosk, providing information about opportunities to become more incorporated into the cathedral community. Volunteers usually serve on a monthly rotation at each of the main Sunday services, and are available for special events.
These volunteers support the activities of the congregation by offering the warm hospitality of greeting and serving refreshments at Sunday hospitality hours; occasional community festivities such as picnics on the plaza; and annual celebrations such as the Advent Tea, the Pre-Lenten Pancake Brunch, and Congregation Celebration Sunday. Members of the guild serve in a monthly rotation and as needed, and are willing to roll up their sleeves for setting up and cleaning up after events.
Do you love the history and architecture of Grace Cathedral? Are you a passionate story-teller? Consider becoming a volunteer docent at Grace Cathedral. Docents offer information, hospitality and lead an informative and inspiring walk for visitors through the main level and nave of the cathedral.
We are looking for people with a passion for story-telling, a strong, clear voice and reasonable stamina. We ask docents to become familiar with our murals, stained glass windows, icons and architecture, then to shadow an experienced docent. Volunteers serve on a monthly or weekly rotation, as well as for specially scheduled groups. Email the guild leader for more information.
The Information desk at the back of the Nave is generally staffed daily. These volunteers must be friendly and outgoing, and willing to field a wide variety of questions from the hundreds of visitors who enter the Cathedral each day. Volunteers sign up for three-hour periods, and serve weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. An orientation session is provided.
For more information about any of these opportunities, please contact the Office of the Congregation or call 415-749-6327.
