About the Program

In August 1920, the British secretary of war, a man by the name of Winston Churchill, wrote this assessment of Mesopotamia, the area now known as Iraq: “It seems to me so gratuitous that after all the struggles of war, just when we want to get together our slender military resources and re-establish our finances and have a little in hand in case of danger here or there, we should be compelled to go on pouring armies and treasure into these thankless deserts.” Now finding ourselves in a similar situation 80 plus years later, as Iraqi and American diplomats negotiate and our presidential candidates debate, unlike the aggrieved Mr. Churchill, we must ask – what do the Iraqi people want, and what should we do?

This morning’s guests are photographers and journalists with 30 years of experience between them in countries that read like a Travel Advisory: Rwanda, the Congo, the Gaza Strip, Iran, Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union, Afghanistan. In 2003 they were both in Iraq as the invasion began, and for the next year, they documented a story in their film, Meeting Resistance, not being significantly covered then or in fact much today – the opposition to the US military presence in Iraq.
