About the Program:

More Americans attend a house of worship than citizens of any other country in the Western world, but the United States ranks among the most religiously illiterate. In fact, a recent study concluded that most Americans were unable to name even one of the four gospels or the first book of the Bible.

Stephen Prothero, author of the critically acclaimed American Jesus, is a scholar and chair of the renowned Boston University religion department. Prothero, who writes regularly for The Wall Street Journal, New York Times Magazine and Washington Post, hopes to reverse the downward spiral of religious illiteracy in the United States by returning the teaching of religion to public schools. In his latest book, Religious Literacy, Prothero makes a compelling case that edifying Americans in religious traditions is necessary in order to confront and comprehend domestic and foreign challenges facing this country today.
