A Fantastic Two-Night-Run of Anna Deavere Smith’s “Notes from the Field”

Blog|Grace

On June 10 and 11, playwright, actress and activist Anna Deavere Smith graced us with two amazing performances of her newest work Notes From the Field: Doing Time in Education. She drew tears, laughter and stunned silence from a capacity audience as she voiced a dedicated inner-city school principal, a Native American caught in the school-to-prison pipeline, African-American novelist and intellectual James Baldwin, Congressman John Lewis and others. We were so happy to welcome Anna, who is the cathedral’s inaugural Artist in Residence as well as a cathedral trustee, back to her home here at Grace. Her performance, complete with beautiful accompaniment by Marcus Shelby, was powerful, provocative and a perfect example of why Grace Cathedral offers vibrant art programs. We present them not just as enjoyable cultural experiences, but also because of our commitment to creativity as an engine of empathy, compassion and engagement.
