About the Program:
Elaine Pagels' latest book, Beyond Belief: The Secret Gospel of
Thomas, explores the beginning of Christianity by tracing its
earliest texts, including the secret Gospel of Thomas, rediscovered
in Egypt in 1945. Beyond Belief investigates what Jesus and his
teachings meant to his followers before the invention of doctrine and
before the invention of Christianity as we know it. She will discuss
the history and politics of Christianity and why Christian leaders
chose to include some gospels and exclude others in the New
Testament. Pagels previous work, The Gnostic Gospels, is recipient of
numerous awards and has been chosen by the Modern Library as one of
the 100 best books of the 20th Century.
