Many Americans claim that religion and spirituality are an essential part of their emotional health and well being. So, why has the field of psychiatry historically discounted spiritual and religious practice as irrelevant and sometimes harmful? Freud labeled religion as "an obsessional neurosis" that perpetuates weakness in individuals. Today, mental health professionals are reevaluating the components of spirituality and clinical practice. Our panel reflects on the changing climate of psychiatric practice and discusses whether spiritual health contributes to good mental health.
