THE
VERY REV. ALAN JONES,
Dean of Grace Cathedral.
|
| Most
gays and lesbians feel alienated from the religions of their childhood,
yet still feel a deep yearning for spiritual connection. Either
having abandoned their birthright traditions, or feeling the need
to challenge those traditions, they are in a peculiar position among
people of faith. Three people--The Rev. Jisho Warner, a Zen Buddhist
priest, Christian de la Huerta, executive director of Q*Spirit,
a national network of spiritually-minded gays and lesbians, and
K. Selisse Berry, executive director of Pride Collaborative at the
United Way--talk about their experiences in and out of the closet,
in and out of religious traditions. How must churches and religious
organizations move beyond tolerance to genuine acceptance of gays
and lesbians? How must all of us re-evaluate ourselves and our institutions
to accomplish this? |
