THE
VERY REV. ALAN JONES,
Dean of Grace Cathedral.
|
| There
is even disagreement over what "literal" means. In a discussion
about scripture and homosexuality, The Rev. Bill Countryman, a biblical
scholar at Church Divinity School of the Pacific, and The Rev. Jim
Mitulski, pastor of the Metropolitan Community Church in San Francisco,
examine what it means to read the Bible. Differing interpretations
often reveal opposing theologies, but everyone is reading the same
Bible. Does a "literal" interpretation mean that, since the Bible's
every word is important, the explicit love between David and Jonathan
in Psalms is just as crucial as the sexual (and other) mores in
Leviticus? Or are we being selective (or untrue to the text) by
emphasizing some passages over others? How is the weight of "tradition"
a factor in interpretation? The nature of the Bible itself, both
as a Holy Book and a political tool, is discussed through the lens
of same-gender love. |
