Violent crime: American culture is at once obsessed with it and revolted by it. We have violence of all kinds in popular culture, but we also have an immense and brutal prison system, and the death penalty. And--curiously enough--the vast majority of violent crimes are committed by men. The San Francisco Sheriff's Department, in collaboration with a community-based anti-violence project called manalive, has initiated a program that helps offenders to stop their violent behavior and take responsibility for the harm they have done. Hamish Sinclair, the Executive Director of manalive, joins former violent offender Urban Poole and theater director Roberto Varea--who works with violent offenders through "Resolve to Stop the Violence Project"--to discuss this phenomenon.
