The Memorial Inscription

At the base of the window is a memorial inscription, "In tender memory of/ Emily Cooke Gresham/ beloved wife of the first/ Dean of Grace Cathedral." Emily Williamson Cooke was born on November 5, 1871 in Mobile(?), Alabama. She married the Reverend James Wilmer Gresham in New Orleans on September 28, 1898. She died in San Francisco on July 19, 1940. A pew in the south side of the cathedral nave bears a plaque stating that it was given in honor of Dean-Emeritus and Mrs. Gresham. The garden formerly existing between the former Founders Crypt and former Cathedral House (now the landing before the cathedral entrance) was Mrs. Gresham's special care, and it was dedicated in her memory after her death. The window was dedicated June 15, 1941.
