SAINT MARK WINDOW
The window, like the gospel, emphasizes the miraculous and healing
powers of Jesus as Messiah. The small medallions focus on healing. The
squared lattice displays "knots" showing tiny budded crosses as well as
four five-petaled roses flanking the large medallions and four
fleur-de-lys flanking the small medallions. The flowers are symbolic of
purity and the fleur-de-lys are symbolic of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
although as she is hardly mentioned by the evangelist. She does not
appear in the window. Censing angels, stars of the epiphany, and flames
of divine inspiration are in the top side lancet segments. The grapevine
borders are symbolic of the sacrifice of Christ and the eucharist.
Through the base of the lancets is the phrase, "All things are possible/
to him that believeth" (S. Mark IX.23).
THE GOSPEL WINDOWS
The four windows of the Chapel of Grace nave depict scenes from the
life, ministry and teaching of Jesus Christ as recorded by the four
evangelists, with their specific thematic emphases. In the base of each
window are words of Jesus summarizing the window theme. Symbols of the
evangelists are in the top quatrefoils, with their emblems in the paired
lancet tops. Christ is recognizable throughout by his three-rayed halo
(tri-nimbus) as the Son in the Holy Trinity and (in most images) his
ruby red cloak and aqua blue robe.
