The temptation in the wilderness (S. Luke IV.8: "Get thee behind me Satan"). Standing on a mountain top, Jesus points toward heaven as he rejects Satan's offer of secular power. Egyptian, Persian and Roman buildings represent the kingdoms of the world, offered by Satan if Jesus will worship him.
