St. Luke Window: Right Lancet, medallion D
The presentation of the Christ Child (S. Luke II.20: "mine eyes have
seen thy salvation ..."). In the temple, the aged and pious
Simeon holds the Christ Child, watched by Mary, and thanks God for having seen the Messiah (Nunc
Dimittis). The menorah symbolizes Jesus' Jewish origin and his future as
"a light to lighten the Gentiles" (St. Luke II.32). The caged doves are
the traditional offering of the poor (S. Luke II.24). The medallion is
among the most beautiful in the Gospel series.
