SAINT LUKE WINDOW
The third window, like the gospel, emphasizes the humanity of Jesus, his
infancy and youth, and his mother the Virgin Mary. The secondary theme is
compassion, explored in parables unique to St. Luke's gospel. The top
details, lattice background and borders are the same as those of the
Saint Matthew window. Small medallions (base to top) show Jesus'
parables of compassion and forgiveness. The
Samaritan, the shepherd and the father of the prodigal son can be
interpreted as symbolic of Christ. Parable titles replace scriptural
phrases in the small medallions. Through the base of the lancets is the
phrase, "Forgive and ye shall/ be forgiven" (S. Luke VI.37).
THE GOSPEL WINDOWS
The four windows of the Chapel of Grace nave depict scenes from the
life, ministry and teaching of Jesus Christ as recorded by the four
evangelists, with their specific thematic emphases. In the base of each
window are words of Jesus summarizing the window theme. Symbols of the
evangelists are in the top quatrefoils, with their emblems in the paired
lancet tops. Christ is recognizable throughout by his three-rayed halo
(tri-nimbus) as the Son in the Holy Trinity and (in most images) his
ruby red cloak and aqua blue robe.
