SAINT JOHN WINDOW
The last nave window, like the gospel, is profound and spiritual, with a
focus on Saint John's signs of Christ's divinity, shown in the large
medallions. Secondary themes in the small medallions are the Good
Shepherd and God as Spirit. The top details, lattice background and
borders are the same as those of the Saint Mark window. Small medallions
in the left lancet feature the Good Shepherd, and those in the right
lancet feature Jesus' ministry and have the theme of God as Spirit
(S.John IV.24). Through the base of the window is the phrase, "I am the
way, the truth/ and the life" (S.John XIV.6).
THE GOSPEL WINDOWS
The four windows of the Chapel of Grace nave depict scenes from the
life, ministry and teaching of Jesus Christ as recorded by the four
evangelists, with their specific thematic emphases. In the base of each
window are words of Jesus summarizing the window theme. Symbols of the
evangelists are in the top quatrefoils, with their emblems in the paired
lancet tops. Christ is recognizable throughout by his three-rayed halo
(tri-nimbus) as the Son in the Holy Trinity and (in most images) his
ruby red cloak and aqua blue robe.
