Blessed Virgin Mary Window: Top pane
The enthroned Madonna and Child at the top of this window were inspired by the famous
"Notre Dame de la Belle Verrière" (French for "Our Lady of the Beautiful
Window") at Chartres Cathedral, the most famous stained glass image in
the world, dating from the 1140s. Crowned, the Virgin Mary holds her symbol, the lily, which is also seen flanking the corners of each medallion. The Christ Child raises a hand in triune blessing. The throne
sits on a bed of roses, also seen in the window border. The roses are
symbolic of Mary's attributes of divine love (red) and purity (white).
Spiritual flames flank the top of the window.
