COSTUMES
One of our actors had been the driving force behind the liturgical theater project at Grace Cathedral and had a stock of "biblical robes." (She notes on Casting.) These would be used for Israel's Deliverance at the Red Sea. My concept for A New Heart, which had unseen hands creating a transcendent moment for two everyday people, needed two beige raincoats, which were gladly provided by the two actors involved. (See notes on Actors and food, re: gratitude and willingness.) Since simplicity was the idiom for the whole endeavor, I dressed the actors in black (their own clothes, see ibid.), and left it at that. The audience could focus on their faces and their props and leave the rest to the readings, the music and their imaginations.
