Section through Sanctuary
The sanctuary section, looking north, reveals an elaborate carved reredos, a frequent feature in Bodley and Hare's designs. The windowless wall has no other distractions. As at Truro, Winchester and other English cathedrals, and Washington Cathedral in America, the reredos is intended to be the climactic statement of the cathedral interior. Smaller reredoses are shown in the side chapels. A reredos was planned for the present cathedral but never built. |
