The North Transept & Sanctuary

The word transept is from the Latin transseptum meaning transverse room, since the transepts form the cross arm of the cathedral plan. To the right, inside the Sanctuary, you can see the Choir area and the Great Organ. Also visible is the late Gothic-style pulpit, carved from Indiana limestone, used for service and major addresses. Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Dalai Lama, the Reverend Billy Graham, Dr. Jane Goodall, UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, four Archbishops of Canterbury, Cardinal Suesens of Belgium, Dr. Margaret Mead, Dr. Paul Tillich, and Dr. Eugene Carson Blake are some of the many important visitors who have preached from this pulpit.
