The Ghiberti Doors

Also known as the Gates of Paradise, the main cathedral doors are bronze replicas of originals which stood for centuries at the east entrance to the Baptistry of Florence Cathedral (the Duomo), Italy. Those doors are the masterpiece of the 15th century sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti. They represent the high point in bronze work and early Renaissance art. The replica panels you see here were purchased for the 1964 completion of the Cathedral. Each door weighs 1.37 tons and is 16 feet tall. The doors are opened for major services and events, and are the official entrance for newly-elected bishops and for the bishop visiting his cathedral, as in medieval cathedrals.
