Inside the Spire

Our last stop on the tour is the cramped interior of the cathedral's fleche or spire. The word fleche is French for arrow. The fleche rises 250 feet above street level and is topped by a gilded cross. You can also see portions of the two cathedral towers. The one on the left, the Singing Tower, holds the cathedral carillon of 44 bells. Downtown San Francisco is in the background.

In his 1923 cathedral vision, Bishop Nichols described a fleche, visible "from bay or boulevard." The fleche is in lead-coated copper over steel and is floodlit at night. Eight dragons around the lantern of the fleche are visible from the street. The shaft and cross were raised into place from the parking lot by a huge crane in 1963. The fleche may be the largest of its kind in the United States.
