The North Choir Aisle

Directly ahead is the Service window, showing Jesus and the Samaritan woman, honoring the acolytes, altar guild workers and chorister who serve the Cathedral, and frequently pass this location. The wood-chip sculptured chest below resembles early medieval reliquaries, containing saint's relics. On the wall to the right is a page from an 18th century Spanish psalter. Following centuries old tradition, its large size enabled several choristers to use a single book. Beyond the carved door is the first bishop's chair, or cathedra. This oak cathedra was made for use in Grace Pro-Cathedral (1907), and was used in the present Cathedral before the permanent cathedra was installed in the choir in 1937. Above the cathedra are two pages from the famous King James Bible (1611), the single most influential book in the shaping of the English language. The adjacent statue of Hosea (1957) by David Lemon is of Hatian mahogany.
