The Great Stairs

The Great Stairs open Grace Cathedral to Nob Hill and the city, expressing the Cathedral's stated role as a House of Prayer for All People. The Doors of Paradise, formerly concealed from the street, are in full view. The stairway, which numbers forty steps, contains a granite strip at the base of the steps made of steps from the former (1964-1993) front stairway. As early as 1926, architect Lewis Hobart had envisioned a grand front stairway leading up to the facade from Taylor Street. Cathedral House had been built on the present stairway/labyrinth site in 1912 when the cathedral was to have flanked Jones Street, at the west end of the block. Cathedral House was demolished in 1993. The old fireplaces and much of the divinity school library collection were installed in the new Chapter House, visible to the right of the Gates of Paradise.
