Music

boys choir

Music permeates virtually every aspect of the life of Grace Cathedral, from the liturgy to the concert series. As Episcopalians, we have a musical heritage that is one of the world's richest and most deeply spiritual. For 1,400 years Anglican church music has evolved as an extremely diverse and multilayered art that celebrates and encompasses many different traditions.

The Cathedral organ, given by Harriet Crocker Alexander and her family in memory of her husband Charles B. Alexander, was built by the Æolian-Skinner Company in 1934, and was enlarged in 1952 and 1956, with another addition in 1974 by Casavant Freres. Its 7,286 pipes make it one of the largest organs in the West.

Music at Grace Cathedral is inextricably woven into the liturgy. The Choir is heard at the 11:00 am Sunday Eucharist and at the 5:15 pm Evensong on Thursday. The men of the Choir sing at the 3:30 pm Evensong on Sundays except during July and August. On major feast days the Alexander Organ is augmented by brass and timpani, or full orchestra.

The Music Department is made up of the Canon Organist and Choirmaster, the Associate Organist and Choirmaster, the Cantor and Associate Choirmaster, and the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys, which is comprised of 14 choirmen and 30 choristers. The boys of the Choir are students at the Cathedral School for Boys. The men of the Choir are a professional ensemble. The weekly choir rehearsal on Sunday mornings at 10:15 am is held in the Quire and is open to all visitors in the Cathedral.
