This mixed chorus provides an opportunity for experienced volunteer
singers from the congregation and wider community to perform at several
selected worship services during the year, as well as at a variety of
special occasions. Rehearsals are held Wednesday evenings. Volunteers
must have previous choral experience, read music, have a blending voice
suitable for ensemble singing, and be available for all rehearsals.
Auditions are scheduled periodically throughout the year.

The Grace Cathedral concert series relies on a dedicated band of
volunteers to help with the box office, take tickets, hand out programs,
escort patrons to seats, and serve as agents of hospitality. Commitment
may be for a selected number of concerts. Ushers arrive two hours before
concert time and stay for up to a half an hour following to assist with
cleanup and breakdown.

Coffee Hour is the principal occasion for members of the congregation to
meet each other socially. It is held every week following the 8:15 and
the 11:00 a.m. Sunday services. The early Coffee Hour is located in the
Gift Shop reception area. The main Coffee hour, after the 11:00 a.m.
service, is held on the Plaza in good weather and in Gresham Hall during
the rainy winter months. At the greeter table is an array of brochures
and information that outline the life of the Cathedral community.

The Garden Society is a volunteer group of congregation members and
neighborhood friends of the Cathedral who work on developing and
maintaining the grounds, planting flowers and shrubs and assisting with
pruning and other care for the many planted areas on the Cathedral
close.

The Cathedral Flower Guild maintains all floral arrangements that adorn
the cathedral. Cathedral floral designers work with a select group of
outside florists to create the decorations for weddings and funerals.
Cathedral designers work with volunteers to make floral arrangements for
memorials, offerings of thanksgiving, and regularly scheduled services.
The Flower Guild's biggest projects during the year include The Greening
of the Cathedral at Christmas, The Flowering of the Cathedral at Easter,
and the Feasts of St. Michael and St. Francis.

These outgoing and dedicated individuals are the Cathedral's front line
in our ministry of hospitality, welcoming visitors and offering
assistance and information. At Coffee Hour the greeters staff the table
and kiosk, providing newcomers with ways to be incorporated into the
community. Volunteers usually serve on a monthly rotation at each of the
main Sunday services and are available for special events.

The Newcomer Ministry welcomes visitors and newcomers and encourages
membership in our resident congregation. At the Visitor Center in the
Cathedral, information about the Cathedral community is available, and
those interested in joining the community at Grace are invited to fill
out welcome cards which will begin the process of membership.
The Newcomer Niche, located at Coffee Hour following both the 8:15 a.m.
and 11:00 a.m. services, provides a time and place to meet the Newcomer
Coordinator, a member of the pastoral staff, and other members of our
welcoming team, who will offer directions for your journey. In addition,
there are a number of programs and classes conducted throughout the year
to introduce newcomers to the Clergy of the Cathedral, to the lay
leadership of our resident congregation, and to the rich variety of our
community life.
For further information, e-mail
the Newcomer Coordinator.

The docents of the Guild offer information and hospitality and conduct
formal tours on a daily schedule to the many visitors to Grace
Cathedral. Guides undergo extensive training and usually serve on a
weekly rotation as well as for specially scheduled group tours. A strong
voice and strong legs are a must.

At all services, ushers welcome visitors and congregation members, pass
out service leaflets, take up the collection, guide people during
communion, and straighten up afterward. They must be helpful and
friendly with the strength to stand for several hours. Most volunteers
sign up for a monthly rotation, and all are asked to be on hand for
major services such as Christmas and Easter.

To enhance the quality of life for seniors within our congregation, we
offer opportunities for community, for support, for listening and
sharing and a time for community involvement projects. We gather each month
on a Thursday at 11:00 a.m. with a program that varies
each month. The day may include a conversation with the Dean, Alan
Jones, a guided walk on the labyrinth, or a round table discussion on
senior issues. The program is followed by Holy Eucharist and then lunch.
In addition to this program, seniors are especially invited to enjoy the
music of Grace Cathedral Concerts, adult education classes such as
Sunday morning scripture study, the film series, the Wednesday evening
Lenten series and Thursday morning Bible study. A highlight is a Senior
Retreat at Bishop's ranch in Healdsburg. Click here for the Seniors Program in our Calendar section.
For more information and to be added to the mailing list, please
e-mail us or visit the Seniors with Grace website.
Please note that the Seniors web site is maintained by congregation
members and not by Grace Cathedral.

The Visitors' Information Center -- at the back of the Nave -- is
generally staffed daily. These volunteers must be friendly and outgoing,
and willing to field a wide variety of questions from the hundreds of
visitors who enter the cathedral daily. Volunteers sign up for
three-hour periods, and serve weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. An
orientation session is provided.

The Canterbury Way: A Benedictine Experience is a group of individuals
called as a community to a life of prayer, work and study, and are
guided by the Rule of St. Benedict. They gather at the Cathedral on the
first three Mondays of each month at 6:30 p.m. After singing Vespers in
the Chapel of Grace, they share a meal while listening to Benedictine
readings, followed by a short discussion and Bible study. The evening
closes with Compline. All are invited to participate.
