Search for the Eighth Dean
Grace Cathedral is a place of beauty, challenge and opportunity. It is a magnificent cathedral church perched on the top of Nob Hill in the middle of San Francisco. It is a cathedral challenged by the economy, by a changing donor base, by an increasingly secularized community, and by a desire to clarify and intensify its mission impact in the world. It is a cathedral with a rich history and widespread reputation - a base upon which even more meaningful work in the diocese and the world can be built.
In the eighth dean of Grace Cathedral, we are looking for a woman or man who can be many things to many people. It is a tall order. In the process of discernment, we have challenged ourselves to be clear about what the next dean must do and who the next dean must be. The truth is that there isn't a simple answer: this is a complex job in challenging times.
We seek a person who can preach and who can listen. Who can teach and who can lead. Who can create a vision and is comfortable with ambiguity. Who can connect to the least among us and also successfully fundraise among the wealthiest in our community. Who is secure in themselves and can both lead and collaborate.
If this challenge and complexity excites you, please let us know! We are eager to cast a wide net for candidates in this search. We are eager for a diverse array of candidates to be called to this process. Whether your experience is a fairly typical path through the church, or represents something different from the traditional, we are eager to hear from you. Grace Cathedral and San Francisco have well-deserved reputations for being willing to challenge the norm and view differences as an asset. We are excited about where this search may lead us and we welcome you into the process of discernment!
