In the fall of 2005, Grace Cathedral began its work to establish a new child development center that would aim to fill a gap in the availability of high-quality preschool, and to serve families without the financial means to afford early education before their children enter public school. Because research indicates clear advantages for children enrolled in diverse preschool classroom settings, this new program would be built upon a balance of full-fee, partial-scholarship, and full scholarship families. It would strive to reflect local socio-economic variety and the many ethnicities, cultures, languages, and family structures around it, both drawing upon and supporting this key strength of San Francisco’s child population. In September of 2008, based on this vision, The Community Preschool, Grace Cathedral began its mission with an inaugural class of three and four year-old students and their families.
The Community Preschool is located on Taylor Street mid-way between California and Sacramento.
A limited number of partial scholarships are available to families who demonstrate need for care, and eligibility based on household income. These partial discounts vary from a 30% to 70% discount off the annual tuition. Full scholarships are also available, with eligibility based on Tenderloin neighborhood residency and household income. The Community Preschool is also a participating preschool with San Francisco’s Preschool For All (PFA) initiative, which provides a tuition discount to all city resident children during their pre-kindergarten year.
The Community Preschool, Grace Cathedral is a twelve month program, open Monday through Friday. Our school day is from 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. All children are enrolled during that time. We also offer early care (8 - 9:30 a.m.) and afternoon extended care (3:30 - 6 p.m.)
We wish each of the children moving on to kindergarten and their families a love of lifelong learning.
The Community Preschool gratefully acknowledges these foundations and corporations for their generous annual support of high-quality, intentionally diverse early childhood education.
