Baptism is one of the sacraments of the Episcopal Church. Holy Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ's Body, the Church (The Book of Common Prayer, p. 298). The Episcopal Church recognizes as valid any baptism administered with water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Any person who has been baptized can be registered as a baptized member of Grace Cathedral. If you were baptized in a church other than the Episcopal Church, simply write to the Office of the Congregation, enclose a copy of your baptismal or confirmation certificate, and asked to be registered. If you do not have a certificate, please write with the details of when, where, and in what denomination you were baptized.
The cathedral administers the Sacrament of Holy Baptism four Sundays per year: at the Great Vigil of Easter, All Saints' Day in the fall, the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord in the winter, and the Feast of Pentecost in the early summer.
Adults who wish to be baptized should contact the Office of the Congregation. We offer ongoing formation opportunities, focused on understanding the Christian experience and practicing the way of Jesus.
Because infants and children are too young to make vows for themselves, parents and sponsors (godparents) make vows on their behalf. A preparation and rehearsal meeting is required for parents who present their children to be baptized at Grace Cathedral.
Children who are old enough to speak for themselves (approximately 4-years and older) meet separately for preparation designed to meet their needs and sensibilities. The children’s preparation meeting is usually held in a Sunday school classroom at the same time as the parents’ meeting in the Wilsey Conference Rooms, parents and children practice together during the rehearsal portion of our meeting.

Our programs are funded through the annual financial commitments of congregants. We hope that families will give generously to support the cathedral’s mission, and that the family of every person who is baptized at Grace Cathedral will live into our baptismal vows by participating in our worship, fellowship and stewardship.
