The death of a loved one is difficult, no matter how well prepared we are. The pastoral staff at Grace Cathedral are available to meet and pray with you, and to assist in the planning of a funeral service. It is an honor for us to accompany you during this time, and to offer a place of hospitality and welcome. In the tradition of cathedrals, we also offer a columbarium, where the remains of the deceased can be preserved and honored.

To inquire about scheduling a funeral, call 415-749-6300. We schedule funerals in the nave or one of the side chapels, and try to make memorial services affordable to active congregants and donors.

Funeral and memorial services are based on the order of service in The Book of Common Prayer, which says: "The liturgy for the dead is an Easter liturgy. It finds all meaning in the resurrection. Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we too, shall be raised."

The liturgy is characterized by joy and the reality that nothing can separate us from the love of God. It also honors the the very real grief that comes when someone we love, or struggle to love, dies.

The pastoral staff is also available to discuss advance planning of a funeral. Please feel free to contact us.

Cathedrals have traditionally laid the departed to rest within their walls; in keeping with that tradition, in 1985, Grace Cathedral established a columbarium. The term columbarium is derived from the Latin columba, meaning dove, an almost universal symbol of God's love and peace.

Our columbarium, the Chapel of St. Francis, is located on the second floor of the cathedral's gothic bell tower. It offers a peaceful and dignified space where the cremated remains of loved ones may be laid to rest and cared for in perpetuity in a space that is both beautiful and sacred.

One of America's most accomplished muralists, John De Rosen (Jan Henryk de Rosen), painted exquisite panels (1949) for the old High Altar, now in the Chapel of St. Francis.

Requiem services are held quarterly to remember those whose ashes rest in the Chapel of St. Francis. Requiem dates in 2015 include:

Niche spaces and memorial plaques for those who remains rest elsewhere are available. Click here to download information about prices and payment plans.

The columbarium is open for visitation on Sunday from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. and from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.  Appointments may be made to schedule a visit at another time by using the contact information below.
