The Very Rev. Dr. Jane Shaw, Dean of Grace Cathedral, discussed New Year’s resolutions and finding spiritual meaning in the coming year on KQED’s Forum with Michael Krasny, on Monday, December 31. Use the audio player below to listen to the engaging interview, where Dean Shaw also talks about the role of Grace Cathedral in cultivating the spiritual growth of our community in 2013.
The same day, the Huffington Post published Be Realistic -- Expect a Miracle: How to Make and Keep Our New Year's Resolutions, an article by Dean Shaw about New Year’s resolutions for 2013, as they pertain to issues of grace, spiritual life and engaging the community.
“All the major religions urge us to look beyond ourselves and serve others. Christianity teaches us to love our neighbors as ourselves. In Buddhism there are six perfections, or paramitas, transcendental qualities that are needed for making progress towards enlightenment … So we don't have to be perfect (or amazingly fit or thin) to do something for someone else. We can do it just as we are.”
The article, which also identifies four common problems that result in the failure of resolutions and suggestions for how to successfully keep them, can be read in full here.
