We Seek a Canon for Congregational Life
Posted: Sunday, November 4, 2012
We wish to appoint a senior priest to the position of Canon for Congregational Life.
The Canon for Congregational Life is a member of the Cathedral Chapter and reports to the Dean. The Canon fully participates in the liturgical and sacramental life of the Cathedral; however, the primary responsibility of the position is oversight of the Office of the Congregation and all its related programmatic activities, and direct line management of the majority of its staff. The position also focuses attention on congregational growth, evangelism, formation, discipleship, stewardship and hospitality. The Canon is the staff liaison for the Congregation Council, which is an elected body (but not a vestry) and works with them especially in the areas of identifying, raising up and equipping lay leaders in the congregation and coordinating the activities of the guilds and lay ministries. The Canon coordinates pastoral care, an important responsibility that is shared across the team, and also has ultimate oversight of the Cathedral’s outreach programs, which are organized by the Minor Canon for Social Outreach, who reports to the Canon. It is also likely that the appointed person will, in collaboration with the development office, coordinate the annual stewardship campaign, integrating that work with congregational growth and vitality, and cultivating gift prospects in the congregation.
