An echo of the 12th century Isenheim altarpiece's Entombment of Jesus, the predella, or base, depicts the village of Hamburg, South Africa with a funeral in progress – that of Susan Paliso’s (see far left panel, altarpiece fully closed) son Dumile, who succumbed to AIDS in 2002, at the age of 35.
